The username rules this tool checks

Instagram usernames can be up to 30 characters long and may use letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Spaces, hyphens, emoji and other symbols are not allowed. Before a suggestion is shown, the generator checks it against those rules and drops any idea that breaks one.

It is also stricter than it has to be in two ways: it keeps periods away from the start and end of a username and never puts two in a row, and it writes everything in lowercase. That keeps each idea easy to read and easy to type.

How to choose an Instagram username

1. Use the words people would search. Your name, your brand or your topic are the words someone types when they look for an account like yours, so put one of them in the username.
2. Generate a few sets. Try the same keyword with a different niche or style, and copy the three ideas you like most.
3. Say each one out loud. A username you can say in one breath is easier to share. A period or an underscore can make two words readable, but several of them make a handle hard to remember.
4. Check it in the app. Search for the username on Instagram, then try it in the username field of your profile to confirm you can use it.

After you claim the username
